How to Write a Person Line

A Person Line is a sentence in the form “I am becoming someone who ______.” It keeps your attention on who you are becoming, which you can work on today, instead of on an outcome you cannot control.

How to build one

  1. Fill in a Gap Map. List the skills, stamina habits, and stories that stand between you and your goal.
  2. Circle one item in each column.
  3. Turn the circled items into a sentence about behavior.

Examples

  • “I am becoming someone who reaches out to potential clients.”
  • “I am becoming someone who finishes what I start.”
  • “I am becoming someone who asks for what a job is worth.”

What makes a good one

It names something you do, not something you receive. It is specific, and it is within your control. “I am becoming someone who is rich” is a wish. “I am becoming someone who sends five pitches a week” is a Person Line.

Use the free Gap Map, then write your Person Line at the top of your Daily Receipt page.
